St. Olave's Stage 2 Intensive Course (Year 6)

Fewer than 1 in 10 applicants secure a Year 7 place at St. Olave’s, making it one of the most selective grammar schools in the UK.  ​The St Olave’s selection process is based upon a two stage exam.  Only the top 450 students from the SET are invited back to sit Stage 2.

​

Stage 2 is exceptionally challenging, testing English and Maths far beyond standard 11+ levels, pushing even the most academically able 10–11 year olds.

​

There are two entry points to this intensive course:

  • The early starter option for those who wish to start preparing for this rigorous exam straight after the SET (before results are published).  This allows an extra 3 weeks of preparation.  

  • The post-results option which starts immediately after the SET results are released in mid-October

 

The course continues through the October half-term, finishing just before the exam date in mid-November. 

 

This course will focus predominantly on the most challenging and unique aspects of the St. Olave's Stage 2 exam:

  • Poetry comprehension and analysis

  • Creative writing techniques under time pressure

​

We will also cover (at a high level):

  • Critical reading & comprehension

  • Advanced problem-solving in Maths

  • Exam technique and time management skills to maximise performance

Creative Writing Skills (Year 5 & 6)

Super-selective grammar schools and many independent schools include a creative writing task in their entrance exams.  Strong performance in this section can make a real difference to overall results.

​

Writing effectively under time pressure is a skill that requires guidance and practice. This course teaches students practical techniques to plan, structure and enhance their writing so they can gain higher marks and significantly improve their chances of success.
